Accessing Notices to Mariners

Portuguese Notices to Mariners

How we use them!

As part of the Lagos Navigators’ aim to help visiting yachtsmen get the most from their visit, we publicise extracts from the Notices to Mariners, produced by the Portuguese Authorities.

We use our discretion in selecting items which are relevant to cruising along the Algarve.  For instance, changes to the Cape St Vincent TSS and the “Sea Scooping” areas for fire-fighting sea-planes will not be included!

While I do have some large scale harbour charts, my main charts are from the Portuguese Recreational Series, 25R1 to 25R12.  These are all at a scale 1:150,000, have consistent style and include information on marinas.  The ones I use for the Algarve are:-

Chart 25R11; Sagres to Vilamoura. (Incl Cape St Vincent and north to Carrapateira.)

Chart 25R12; Vilamoura to River Gaudiana.(Incl. the Faro/Olhão Estuary.)

Relevant information for these charts will be publicised by us.

If YOU want to access the full list of Notices, note that the web site and its instructions are all in Portuguese – and Google’s translation service gets confused by the technical terms. (Eg. Cartas comes up as Letters, not Charts. And Sondo comes up as Probe, not Sounding or Depth!)

The procedure is as follows.

1. Go to                         https://anavnet.hidrografico.pt/cartas.aspx

2. Then, under              Listas da Cartas                          (List of Charts)

3. Select Region          Portugal Continental                    (Continental Portugal)

4. Select Series           Recreio                                        (Recreational)

You will then be presented with a list of all 12 Recreational Charts, - (one or two may be on the next page!)

5. Scroll down             To find the one you want.  We use 25R11 and 25R12

NB.  Clicking on the Chart Number gives a “Google Earth” map of the area covered.

6. Select                       Column 3, Green Arrow, Avisos   (Warnings)

A full list of Warnings is displayed; these are available as PDF Files.

7. Select; Read; Print as necessary – you’ll soon learn the key words!

Bing or Google will give an approximate translation - but see the note above.
