By the letter of the law, any yacht visiting Portugal is liable for “Light Dues”, to help to pay for the up-keep of Navigation aids. A visitor staying for less than 6 months is charged €2 –but in reality is rarely challenged for it and few bother until caught.
If staying longer, the annual cost varies with your category of sailing, as defined under the paper on “Legislation” , and the rates in 2011 were:- Ocean €56, Offshore €28, Coastal €11.50, Restricted coastal €8.50, Inland/estuaries €6.
These dues apply to locals as well as visitors – and the Maritime Police do check up on it.
It is payable to the “Captain of the Port”, whose office is just over the Marina foot-bridge. It is single-storey building, to the right of the Marina Rio Hotel. Take your passport and your boat’s registration documents.
